Itinerary Highlights

Join us on this incredible opportunity to experience the pilgrimage sites renowned in the Middle Ages, many made popular as stopping points on the trail to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This is a region rich in history—religious and political. See Itinerary Highlights.

England and France both claimed this land as their own, and rightly so. Eleanor of Aquitaine, heir to the Duchy of Aquitaine (a great swath of land along the Atlantic Coast from Brittany to the Périgord), ruled that land in her own right.

France and England began fighting over the land that Eleanor brought to her marriage in 1337 and did not stop until 1453, when a young French girl, Joan d’Arc had a vision. Dressed as a youth, Joan made the Aquitaine, French for good.  A century later, Calvinists brought their religion to France and the Wars of Religion between Catholics and Protestants ensued, taking their toll, especially in the Protestant Périgord. By the end of the 17th century, the Périgord was largely forgotten, and therefore spared many of the 'improvements' that transformed medieval French cities, chief among them, Paris, into sprawling metropolises. Now celebrated as "La France Profonde", this real French countryside welcomes us and allows us to participate in village life in the rural SW of France.

Lourdes On 11 February 1858, a 14-year-old local girl, Bernadette Soubirous, claimed a beautiful lady appeared to her in the remote Grotto of Massabielle. The lady later identified herself as "the Immaculate Conception" and the faithful believe her to be the Blessed Virgin Mary. The lady appeared 18 times, and by 1859 thousands of pilgrims were visiting Lourdes. A statue of Our Lady of Lourdes was erected at the site in 1864.  Since the apparitions, Lourdes has become one of the world's leading Catholic Marian shrines. It has such an important place within the Roman Catholic church, that  Pope John Paul II visited the shrine twice.
